About MMAF

What the MMA Foundation is doing

Scholarships

MMA Foundation continues its longstanding commitment to medical students by awarding partial four-year scholarships to nine medical students at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Duluth campuses and at Mayo Medical School.

Reaching Underserved Communities

Rural Physician Loan Forgiveness

Efforts to reach medically underserved communities took a big step forward in 2008 when MMAF agreed to fund an additional contract for Rural Physician Loan Forgiveness, a program of the Minnesota Department of Health -  Office of Rural Health and Primary Care. As a result, last September, Stacy Longnecker, M.D. started her career in Family Medicine at the North Side Medical Center in Ortonville, Minnesota. That clinic had two open primary care positions for more than a year. Now Dr. Longnecker is not only seeing and treating patients, but she is making the caseload more manageable and reducing the frequency of being on call for her fellow physicians, improving the practice environment for patients and physicians alike!

Minnesota's Future Doctors

To encourage young people from underserved communities who want to pursue careers in medicine, MMAF has made a $10,000 grant to Minnesota's Future Doctors. This program, created by medical students as a collaboration between  the University of Minnesota and Mayo Medical Schools, is helping 150 college students around the state prepare for successful application to medical school.

State Loan Repayment Program

MMAF has committed $20,000 to match an additional $20,000 to fund an agreement that will help a physician pay down the expenses associated with medical education. In return, the physician commits to practicing in a Minnesota Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for a minimum of two years.

Underserved/Rural Health Care Initiative

MMAF is continuing to expand its commitment to health care in underserved communities. Watch this website for announcements on new programs and partnerships.
